Uttarakhand waits for better rail connectivity
Dehradun, 13 Feb 2008
With barely a fortnight left for the announcement of the Railway budget, people here are not only waiting for the arrival of trains in the hill regions like other Himalayan states but are also looking forward to better rail connectivity with other states.
The visits of railway minister Mr Lalu Prasad to Uttarakhand many a time in the past and his promise of better rail links have raised the hope of the people of this hill state.
A few months ago, the minister admitted the need to have the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag and Tanakpur-Bageshwar rail links as part of the national plan. It is believed that there could be some announcement in this regard in the rail budget. Past surveys have recommended the rail link on the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag route. The first survey was done in 1919 on the initiatives of the then deputy commissioner of Garhwal JM Clay. The next survey was done in 1996, by the then minister of state for Railways Mr Satpal Maharaj. But the rail link on the hills here remained a dream.
Experts find no impediments to the construction of rail routes here. Dr PC Nawani, director of the Geological Survey of India, who is a consultant to the Rail line Plan in Jammu and Kashmir, says the hills of Uttarakhand are fit for the rail links. “The situation here is more favourable compared to Jammu and Kashmir as the rocks here are harder,†Dr Nawani said.
“It is perhaps due to the lack of political will that the hills of Uttarakhand are still without trains,†Mr Naveen Gupta, a trader said. He reasoned: “If there can be trains in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Darjeeling, why not in Uttarakhand?â€
The people also long for the Doon-Saharanpur rail line, a double rail line from Doon-Luxar and its electrification, a fast train to Mumbai and direct trains to other parts of the country, particularly Bangalore and Goa.
With the growing number of tourists, it is essential to have better rail connectivity, Mr LM Sharma, an insurance company manager said. According to him, the Doon-Saharanpur line would help frequent travellers as it would shorten by two hours the distance from Dehradun to Delhi. It would be about 30-35 km, railway officials said.

Railway line are must to connect hill with the entire nation & compete in the the rapidly growing industry.
but much needed right now the condition of the National Highways specially Ruderpur to New Delhi and Haridwar to New Delhi are very bad…need to make both the highways 4lane with devider so that vehicles commuting become smoother for the industrial growth of the state….
both Industrial Hubs Rudrapur(pantnagar) and Haridwar to be well connected…with National capital..must needed
atleast three airports to be in operation…
Pantnagar should be a airport in operation alongwith Joligrant in DDN. as soon as it can possible.
suggetion;
survey should be done for new rail line extending further from kotdwara to dogadda and to the famous corbett park moving to satpuli then to vyasghat devprvag srinagar and further.this will boost the adveture and pilgrimage tourism of the area.

HAPPY NEW YEAR AT VILLAGE AND JUNGLE RESORT NAITHANA PAURI GARHWAL GROUP OF `25 PAX CELEBRATED NEW YEAR IN THE VILLAGE RESORT THREE DAYS STAY WAS AMAZING .IT WAS ALL LOCAL NOTHING FROM OUTSIDE .UNFORGETABLE. THANKS FOR SUPPORTING ME.
if u cant make a new tracks then at least u can run a superfast trains in the existing tracks like from dehradun to mumbai via delhi
or ramnagar to mumbai
ramnagar to jammu
or saharan pur to any central part of india
at least run someeee of the superfast trains as people are fed up of changing trains from delhi
the person who want to travela long journey from mumbai, p[une or ratlam then they demand for the single running train and that also superfast. as time is too precious thing for each and every person at the moment
It will be milestone of growth of garhwal, if this project for railway lines in Garhwal will fullfill.
It has become a permanent tradtion in this country that whosover becomes Railway Minister, whether he/she is Lalu, Nitish, Paswan, or Mamta, he/she can only lthinks for after his/her State – whether it is laying of new railway line, running of new fast trains, establishing a new coach factory, recruitment in railways etc., and other parts of India gets a negative treatment from such parachalists. MAY GOD SAVE THIS COUNTRY FROM SUCH MINISTERS. It is a fact that only the British were responsible for rail link to Uttarakahand and nothing was done after great Independence.
Uttrakhand offers great potential for expansion of national and international tourism. If a fast rail link is established even upto Rudraprayag and a new line is opened from Saharanpur to Dehradun which will cut considerable distrance between Delhi-Dehradun it will indeed boost tourism in this region besides other economic benefits. To beign with,, a superfast night train between Delhi to religious town of Rishikesh will be of much help as Mussoorie Express which reaches Haridwar in the morning and leaves for Dehradunn and the detached Rishikesh coaches reach Rishikesh after many hours though the distance is only 24 kms. People going to Srinagar/Chamoli/Uttarkashi are forced to get down in Hardwar and then go to Rishikesh by some other means as there are a few buses available from Haridwar for going to remote areas of Chamoli/Uttarkashi. The comments offered earlier are sincerely regretted and may kindly be withdrawn.
